"Bull trout/Dolly varden" are members of the Salmonidae family. They are native to Idaho and have actually been cultured, reared and stocked at various times from our State fish hatcheries. They are aggressive fish eaters, almost exclusively, when they reach between 8 - 12" in length. For this reason, they are extremely vulnerable to angling. Often referred to simply as a “dolly”, most think they have caught a brook trout when first seen.

Dolly Varden. Primarily a native fresh water species, they do frequent shallow salt water and brackish waters to feed, unlike their cousin, the Char who does live in the salt water and returns to the fresh water to spawn. Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma Walbaum) are locally abundant in all coastal waters of Alaska. Two basic forms of Dolly Varden occur in Alaska waters. The southern form ranges from lower Southeast Alaska to the tip of the Aleutian Chain, and the northern form is distributed on the north slope drainages of the Aleutian Range northward along Alaska’s coast to the Canada border.

Dolly Varden have been much maligned as a predator of salmon. From 1921 to 1941 there was a bounty on Dolly Varden in Alaska. It was terminated when analysis of the 20,000 tails submitted for payment in 1939 revealed that more than half were from coho salmon, and of the remainder, more were from rainbow trout than were from Dolly Varden. Dolly varden tend to look like trout, except they have dark bodies with colorful spots. The spots are usually bright red or yellow, but can be other colors as well. There are two kinds of dolly varden that are fished in Alaska, northern dolly varden and southern dolly varden. Northern dolly varden is larger than its southern counterpart.
